AD&E® Shaped Energy Gantry™
Cargo and Vehicle High-Energy X-Ray Inspection System The revolutionary, patented Shaped Energy Gantry™ system is the only multi-view, relocatable, high-energy system on the market. It delivers the most reliable means of detecting threatening materials, weapons, and explosives hidden in cargo containers, tankers, and large vehicles. Using powerful 6 MeV transmission X-rays, Shaped Energy Gantry provides high penetration into inspected objects - up to 14 inches (350 mm) of steel; yet the system does not require an exterior building, heavy shielding, or standoff zones.
|
The system also employs optional Z® Backscatter technology, empowering operators with multi-view capability for detecting well-hidden, organic contraband, such as plastic explosives, that transmission X-rays often miss. All images are displayed on high-resolution monitors. Extremely safe for operators and cargo alike, Shaped Energy Gantry meets the radiation safety requirements of CDRH. It is a customizable solution with a throughput capacity greater than 24 trucks per hour.

AS&E® RDIM
Ruggedized Detection Imaging Module The Ruggedized Detection Imaging Module (RDIM) is a relocatable, one-sided Z® Backscatter™ imaging system for screening vehicles at a security checkpoint or border crossing.Security officials can screen vehicles and vehicle-borne cargo containers for terrorist threats and contraband simply by directing vehicles to drive past the system. RDIM employs AS&E's patented Z Backscatter technology, which produces photo-like images of the contents of a vehicle, providing manifest verification information and highlighting organic materials, such as explosives or drugs.

RDIM employs AS&E's patented Z Backscatter technology, which produces photo-like images of the contents of a vehicle, providing manifest verification information and highlighting oThe system is built in three separate modules that can be connected to form a standard 20 foot ISO container for ease of relocation. The system has been designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, as well as shock and vibration. A CCTV system gives the operator a view of the traffic driving past the imaging module. RDIM is safe for operators, scanned vehicles and their drivers, and the environment. The radiation dose to a person being scanned by the system is equivalent to two minutes of airplane flight at altitude. The system also includes a Personnel Scanning mode that displays to the operator what is in the X-ray beam and automatically shuts off X-rays if anything is within 5 feet (1.5 m) of the X-ray source.

TECHNOLOGY The technology behind Shaped Energy Gantry begins with the proprietary design of our compact 6 MeV linear accelerator (linac). The linac output is heavily filtered (shaped) in such a way as to remove unnecessary radiation without affecting the ability of the beam to penetrate dense objects. As a result, there is a much lower ambient radiation field around the inspection system, enabling the "open" nature and compact design of the cabinet safe system. Photo-like Z Backscatter images reveal organic materials that other systems miss, including plastic explosives, composite weapons, and drugs. The combination of technologies improves detection and offers more comprehensive views of the scanned object. Optional Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD) can inspect for neutrons and gamma rays typically associated with fissile (nuclear bomb) or dirty bomb (e.g. Cesium-137) materials.
Shaped Energy's high-energy transmission technology provides superior detection capability for containerized cargo. The Shaped Energy Gantry system can penetrate up to 14 inches of steel or over 8 ft of oil.

Z® Backscatter
Van™ Drive-by Z Backscatter-only cargo and vehicle screening system American Science and Engineering’s Z® Backscatter Van™ (ZBV) is a low-cost, mobile X-ray screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. With one-sided, backscatter-only imaging and the option for Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD), security officials can use ZBV for screening vehicles, sea containers, and other cargo for terrorist threats, trade fraud, and contraband — simply by driving past the subjects.
|
The ZBV employs AS&E’s patented Z® Backscatter technology, which produces photolike images of the contents of a container or vehicle, providing manifest verification information and highlighting organic materials. The ZBV can image 10 lbs (4.5 kg) of organic material, such as C4 or cocaine, placed immediately behind 0.24 inches (6 mm) of steel when scanned from a distance of 5 ft (1.5 m) at a scan speed of 0.3 mph (0.5 kph). The ZBV’s optional Radioactive Threat Detection (RTD) feature is capable of identifying low levels of radioactivity from both gamma rays and neutrons. The ZBV is ideal for screening for large quantities of drugs, car/truck bombs, and stowaways. The ZBV is a Z Backscatter-only system that does not require a detector on the far side of the scanned object, making it highly maneuverable and flexible. It can be operated covertly, since it maintains the outward appearance of an ordinary van. With the operator controls mounted on a console in the center of the ZBV’s cab, the system can be operated by one or two people simply by swiveling the console towards the driver’s or passenger’s side. Stationary and Remote Operation The ZBV can also be operated in stationary mode by parking the system and producing X-ray images of vehicles as they pass. Screening can also be accomplished remotely while the system is parked. Remote operation allows scanning to be done safely, even in dangerous environments. In these modes, ZBV operators may elect to scan the occupants of the subject vehicle. For this application, AS&E offers a Personnel Scanning option that may better enable the customer to meet any applicable country-specific regulatory requirements.
